Tree Stewards Program - Fall 2024
In order to become a Tree Steward, you must:

Attend 3 of the 4 classes (see schedule on this page)

Review materials before each class and come prepared

Demonstrate knowledge of the material

Commit to 4 to 6 hours a month of volunteer time
This is the syllabus and schedule for the Tree Stewards - Fall 20204 class. Classes will likely run from 9am until noon.

Saturday, September 7th at 9am: Selection (Why Natives are better than non-natives) at the NHC Arboretum (6206 Oleander Dr).

Topics covered: Biology, Anatomy, Species, Culture, Tree Identification, Types of nursery trees and what to expect

Preparation for class: read Chapters/"Units" 1 & 2 (and 3 if you are ambitious) of the VA Tree Steward Training Manual.

This is mostly a classroom class with a stroll around the Arboretum.

Saturday, September 14th at 9am: Tree Care at the MLK Center (401 S 8th St)

Topics covered: Planting, Pruning, Aftercare

Preparation for class: read Chapters/"Units" 6 & 7 of the VA Tree Steward Training Manual.

Wear clothes that can get dirty.

Saturday, October 5th at 9am: Tree Disorders at the MLK Center (401 S 8th St)

Topics covered: Environmental Factors, Site Surveying, Proper Species Placement, Disease and Pest Identification (Basic look for’s)

Preparation for class: read Chapters/"Units" 5 & 8 of the VA Tree Steward Training Manual.

Wear clothes that can get dirty.

Saturday, October 12th at 9am: Soil Importance & Graduation at the MLK Center (401 S 8th St)

Topics covered: Watering, Mulching, Intro to Soil Sciences, Importance of mycorrhizal activity.
