ADVOCACY IN ACTION

At the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees (ACFT), we do more than plant and give away trees—we fight every day to protect, preserve, and expand Wilmington’s urban canopy and the mature forests that support the health and resilience of the Lower Cape Fear region. Our advocacy efforts ensure that trees and green infrastructure remain a priority at the city, county, and state levels, shaping policies that safeguard our natural environment for future generations.

Current advocacy issues include: Sledge Forest, Bryan Tract at 3990 Independence Blvd, and House Bill 24.

SLEDGE FOREST

ACFT opposes the proposed Hilton Bluffs development, which threatens the ecologically significant Sledge Forest, home to centuries-old trees and critical floodplain habitats. The project would disrupt wetlands, increase flooding risks, and degrade water quality, endangering both the environment and public safety.

BRYAN TRACT

ACFT advocates for a balanced approach to development at 3990 Independence Blvd, prioritizing conservation, education, and low-impact recreation. With its young loblolly pine forest and floodplain, the site presents an opportunity for sustainable forest management and community green space.

NC HOUSE BILL 24

ACFT supports HB24, which would restore local governments' ability to use down-zoning to balance growth and environmental protection. Unchecked development has led to widespread tree loss, and this bill would help municipalities better manage urban expansion while protecting green infrastructure.

SPEAKING UP FOR TREES

We actively engage with local officials, developers, and community stakeholders to advocate for smart policies that prioritize tree preservation. Whether it’s fighting to strengthen tree protection ordinances, ensuring sustainable urban planning, or preventing unnecessary deforestation, ACFT stands as a voice for trees in the Lower Cape Fear region.

POLICY & COMMUNITY ACTION

  • Urban Forestry Advocacy – We push for policies that protect existing trees, require responsible development, and increase canopy coverage.

  • Stormwater & Climate Resilience – Trees are natural stormwater managers, cooling our city and reducing flood risks. We advocate for green infrastructure solutions that work with nature, not against it.

  • Tree Equity & Environmental Justice – We champion tree planting in underserved neighborhoods, ensuring that every community benefits from shade, cleaner air, and improved quality of life.

YOUR VOICE MATTERS

Advocacy is a team effort. Join us in speaking up for trees by attending public meetings, supporting tree-friendly policies, and raising awareness. Together, we can ensure the Lower Cape Fear region grows in a way that values and protects its most vital natural resources.
